Mexican Marigold, Tagetes lucida a.k.a Mexican Tarragon, is a plant native of Mexico and Central America. In Mexico, it is known as hierba de Santa Maria. It is also known as hierba de San Juan and sold in substitution of Hypericum perforatum (St. John’s Wort).
Tagetes lucida Mexican Marigold is also used as a tea to treat the common cold, intestinal gas and diarrhea.
Mexican Marigold Tagetes lucida is recommended as a stimulant of the immune system, and to treat emotional and nervous complaints, such as anxiety, irritability and depression. It has been recorded in Spanish texts as a medicinal plant since the 16th century. Lim, 2014. Edible Medicinal And Non-Medicinal Plants, Vol 7, pp 448–455
“Results support the anxiolytic and sedative-like properties of T. lucida in traditional medicine by involving serotonergic and GABAergic neurotransmission and coumarinic constituents.” Perez-Ortega et al, 2016.
“The pharmacological activity of Tagetes lucida extracts can be attributed in part to the presence of coumarin-type compounds, such as HN and DF, which have activity as potentiators of catalepsy and blockers of psychotic observed behaviours. It is shown for the first time that T. lucida interacts with the dopaminergic and glutamatergic systems, both important mechanisms involved in psychosis.” Sandra Liliana Porras-Dávila et al, 2022.
Tagetes lucida is said to exhibit powerful aphrodisiac effects in humans! Lim, 2014.
“In Mexico, juice that has been pressed from the herbage or crushed leaves are mixed with water or wine and drunk as an aphrodisiac.
A tea of the plant is also used as a stimulant. It has been recognized since Spanish Colonial times that Tagetes lucida has aphrodisiac effects.”
